Japanese barge survives war and 70 years in a tunnel

PB033881 Barge 70 years in a tunnel

Seventy years after the war, Kokopo Tours will take you to see these Japanese barges quietly rusting away. The barges survived American and Australian bombing by being hauled from the sea into tunnels carved in the soft rock of the cliffs around Rabaul harbor, but ultimately were rendered useless by lack of fuel as "Fortress Rabaul" was isolated and supplies cut off.
