Tavurvur crater two weeks later from Matupit Island - burnt rock and ash and just a drift of steam and a whiff of sulphur

14-09-27 P1190236 Tavurvur from Matupit

Two weeks after the eruption, Tavurvur is its old self again, except that once again it is looking like a burnt slag heap or lava, rocks and ash. Amazingly, Matupit Island itself was hardly touched by the latest eruption; the big blow out was just north of it across the isthmus that joins the island to Rabaul, and the winds took the lesser ash clouds in the same direction.
