Reconstruction work on Matupit Island, devastated by the volcano eruptions of 1994

P1060689 Recpnstruction on Matupit

Matupit Island and its near areas stand between Tavurvur volcano and Rabaul, so bore the brunt of the searing gases and burning, acrid, abrasive ash falls from when the mountain erupted in 1994. Twenty years on, most residents continue to live in resettlement areas on the other side of the Gazelle Peninsula, but some hardy souls have returned and are gradually bringing the island to life again.  P1060689
