By 10am, Tavurvur had settled into a pattern of explosions with quiescent periods in between. Tavurvur, Rabaul, 29 August, 2014

After the initial blast, Tavurvur continued blowing out smoke, ash, and decreasing amounts of lava, then settled down to the periodic explosions of a classic Strombolian eruption. By 10AM, about six hours after the initial eruption, the lava flows have ceased and the mountain is quiescent for 20-30 minutes at a time, pictured here, seen from the Blue Lagoon lookout. Driving through Rabaul and near areas this vehicle acquired a coating of dust and ash. It will have to be washed off, and soon: wiping it off will damage the paintwork as the ash is very sharp edged and hard, and it is also very corrosive -- add a little water and you have weak sulphuric acid so plenty of water is the go. P1170638
