P1036531 Rainy season, Vunakabi

It never rains but it pours. Well, not quite, but serious downpours are a feature of the wet topics rainy season - roughly October-March here south of the equator. Sometimes the downpours are prolonged, but mostly they last half-an-hour or so here in Rabaul before the winds carry the storm clouds away. Of course, while the rain is streaming down, it is still warm! Building with a mix of bush materials and new and recycled permanent materials is common in the Islands, with building techniques reflecting the temporary nature of bush materials. Papua New Guineans are great recyclers; here a discarded washing machine is pressed into service as a small water tank. P1036531
