Pandanus palms abound on the Duke of York Islands

P8215147 DOY Pandanus palms abound1.A

The pandanus palms with their flying buttress roots thrive where little else will grow, clinging to the almost bare stoney surface of the upraised coral on the islands' exposed outer edges, bearing the brunt of wind and storms. The leaves provide the islanders with an important building and economic material -- they make mats and baskets from the dried leaves to sell in the Kokopo market. P8215147
