Canoe commuting kids show off their boat skills

P1000397 DOY school commute canoe.A

For Duke of Yorks children living on the smaller islands, going to school means paddling for up to half an hour across the lagoon to the bigger islands where schools are located. Here a bunch of kids demonstrate their mastery of their featherweight craft (you can lift them with one hand) by turning on an "outriggers in the air" display to welcome the visitor in the passing banana boat. These youngsters grow up in and around these lightweight dugouts so paddling to school is perfectly natural for them. When they get home, they might change then paddle out to fish for dinner for themselves and the family.  P1000397
